In its fifth year the Fentress Global Challenge invites young architects to explore future design possibilities in public architecture. This year the annual competition challenges students to envision The Airport of the Future, designing speculative projects for a future in which airports will have ever-more significance as facilities for travel, retail, leisure, national security and more.
Competition participants are encouraged to consider local context, current technological trends, project feasibility and passenger experience. Designs must focus on a pre-existing airport site chosen from the Airport Council International’s top ranked terminals, including London Heathrow, LAX, Los Angeles and Fentress Architects’ own Incheon International, South Korea.
In less than a century, the airport appears to have emerged as a new architectural typology of increasing importance, comparable to other large-scale public buildings such as museums, libraries, temples and courthouses. As air travel and the need for new terminal buildings continue to evolve at an unprecedented speed, the challenge seeks design solutions that respond to contemporary social trends, new technological developments and pressing environmental requirements.
The winning entry will receive a $15,000 cash prize, as well as a paid internship at Fentress Architects, airport specialists and sponsors of the competition. The second prize entry will receive a $3,000 cash prize and the third prize will receive a $2,000 cash prize. The People’s Choice Award will be carried out over Facebook where the shortlisted project that receives the most ‘Likes’ will receive a $1,000 cash prize.
The deadline for submissions is October 1st, the shortlist will be announced on October 14th and winners will be announced on November 1st 2016.
